Process of creation

It is great pleasure to introduce you summarised process behind creation of something so simple like unique cat bed. I think that all together, it took us few hundreds of hours and each stage below generated many failures (from which some were expensive). Learnings and final results was however without any doubt worth of such effort!

Inspiration

At the very beginning, there was rather need for nice and useful cat bed. After googling what is available on the market, I realised that it is all either too ugly or with a price tag that I am not willing to pay.

As I like to clearly differentiate between clean geometric shapes and organic structure, I was inspired by Platonic shapes (who paved the way for future geometry). Intention was about to create whole “crystal” collection. Product called “Onion” actually came as a inspiration from cake cream decorations and many different living room lamps.

Designing

With complex shapes that no one try to create before, I faced elementary need to share these ideas. Simple pencil and notepad seem to be good way how to do first steps and move forward.

Even though picture on the right side was generated by Ai instead of my hand, my original drawing look similar.

3D models and sewing patterns

Next challenge was to create unique sewing pattern for some company. But how to make it? We need product to be perfectly sized for cats, also with a design that would keep its shape. Asking my friend from beautiful Brazilian city Recife to do 3D model & derive sewing patterns from it was very improvised, but promising strategy.

You can see that we tried different sewing pattern options assuming lots of details of future manufacturing as none of us was expert in the topic. We only had vision and passion.

Prototyping

Prototyping was a next step where we were fine tuning details such as

  • What specific material we should use?
  • What should be thickness of material to keep design holding its shape?
  • What type of sewing we want to do to have clean lines?

Countless prototypes with little improvements had to be created to have finally something that I would like to have in my home

Manufacturing

it took some time, but the more beautiful was to see first picture of created products. As a designer, I have to say that the only better feelings than to see your design for the first time alive is to hold it in your hands or facing high demand for what you envisioned.

I care about environment so our felt material is 100% recycled and made from scraps & spare pieces.
