How to motivate your cat to go into a cat bed

So you’re wondering how to maximise the chances that your cat will start using a cat house? Here are some tips

Location

Did you place your new cat house on the floor or some other interior design spot? You may like it, but your cat doesn’t necessarily have to like it too. To match with your cats preferences, you could try placing the cat house in the location where she is already used to sleeping. What about the corner of your bed, right next to your head? What about placing it on a chair right next to your bed? You could also try sunny or higher places which your cat might like too (but remember, you should avoid direct sunlight). Probably the best placement is to put it in the same place where your previous cat house was. Such a place is proven to be safe for your cat and it will most probably like the new cat house too. Alternatively, placing it in a way that would increase warmth coming from the floor is also very appealing.

Play

Your cat could be a little shy or hesitant before jumping into a new cat house. Some cats even have trauma from being trapped in small cat houses while visiting the vet. You can help them to get familiar with their new house by playing with your cat around it and ensuring the play happens also inside the cat house. After some time of playing, your cat won’t be so shy to discover the new object and its usage. Maybe after exhaustive playing, it will just need some rest and stay inside the cat house for a while.

Don’t force it

I remember the first experience of my cat with our cat houses. He was going close to it, sniffing the new material, but even before he looked inside, he realised that something was wrong. We stopped talking, started staring at him and he recognised that there could be something “wrong”, is it perhaps another trap that we built so he would visit vet? He stop exploring the cat house completely until we initiated play around  the house and started giving him some treats inside the house. Obviously you should not physically force your cat to go inside, despite the different characters of cats, this could put your new cat house out of favour for a longer time.

Put something inside

To make the whole process of our cat discovering the new sleeping spot faster, we put some treats inside. We also thought about using a cat pad inside that would make the house more appealing, something that would create a more soft or warm, cosy place. Out cat seems to really like the faux-fur that we sell as an additional product, but other cats might have different tastes. Do you remember what is right under your cat when she is relaxing or sleeping even without a bed? Some old piece of fabric or other materials could work. The last option that many people use is to use a powerful catnip in the natural form or spray, but to be honest, my cat doesn’t like cheap catnip spray. Instead he smelt the inside of house with interest but went away after smelling the catnip spray. Perhaps he likes a more natural source of perfume and real catnip would satisfy him.
